The impact of maternal drinking on foetal development has long been a cause for concern. Information about the extent of the problem and the cause of problems varies greatly between and within countries.

Here in the UK government policy in England has recommended a consumption level not exceeding 1-2 drinks a week but in light of more recent research this has been reviewed in Scotland to no alcohol in pregnancy.
